ASHM, initially the Australian Society of AIDS Physicians, began in 1988 as a self-help and self-education organisation for clinicians dealing with HIV. It expanded its focus to include viral hepatitis and sexual health, catering to a broader health workforce. In 1990, it was incorporated as the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine.
ASHM quickly organised an annual scientific conference and collaborated with the Australian Government. It also played a role in developing a Health Maintenance and Monitoring Project, leading to the National HIV Education Program for Doctors.
